Macroing

Macroing, Macros, or Macro programs typically refers to the use of a third party program to repeat keypresses. These programs have no knowledge of the game and will repeat the same presses regardless of what is happening.

The use of macros has always been a grey area.
Long ago macros were "okay" as long as you were watching your character. When Nobis and Shinewood 2 boxes became popular some roles were macroable and it remained "okay" to use them as long as you were watching the screen.

As botting became a bigger deal and people used macros as an excuse for botlike casting, GM Error once said he would jail people for using macros if he could prove they were being used. Bots finally became a way of life and the heat on macros became thing of the past, a Dojo was even added where you can run a macro and leave your character unattended to improve their skills and spells.

Here are some examples of ways you could use a macro within darkages;

Comboing

Most bashers who participate in pvp will have a macro to execute their combos.
With bashers needing to press all of their skills at once in complex and sometimes slightly different orders, macro programs are usually required. The program will simply repeat a specified string of letters and numbers when the player presses a single key. One-hit wonders such as Assassin Strike are easy to press but imagine trying to quickly type "D1`a1D1a7S1a7S2s14562a8s8S4D1" each time you want to try and kill somebody!

Improving

Over time it became a rule of thumb that as long as you were awake and not gaining experience using a macro to repeatedly press skills or spells was fine. With the addition of the Dojo, where it's okay to leave your character unattended it became fine to use programs to keep using your skills and spells.

Hunting

This is still a grey area. Even though macros just repeat keystrokes and don't react to stimulus they could still be mistaken for bots. In the past I have used a macro to fas spiorad, dion, mor strioch pian gar, wait two seconds on my wizard alt, whilst I play a priest and curse monsters and heal them.

Other

Anything that requires repetetive clicking or key pushing could easily be macroed. I've used macros to polish gems, and on a different occasion I used one to press ctrl+3 so my character could frown for several hours.
